Water Distribution System Hydraulic Model Calibration and System Evaluation Report
Chapter 3 – Hydraulic Model Development
December 2019

P05049-2019-000 Page 10

CHAPTER 3 HYDRAULIC MODEL DEVELOPMENT
Before building a model, it is necessary to gather information describing the distribution system
network. Many potential sources are available for obtaining the data required to generate a
water distribution model, and the availability of these sources can vary dramatically from city
to city. The following description provides an overview of the data sources used to create the
hydraulic model of Arden Hills’ distribution system.
Arden Hills provided shapefiles from its GIS database of the water distribution system to
develop the network of the distribution system’s pipes and appurtenances. The GIS database
included records on the locations of water mains, valves, hydrants, storage facilities, etc. as well
as the type of material and sizes of water main. The new hydraulic model is based on the same
coordinate system as the Arden Hills GIS base map. The system pump curves and water storage
information was provided by the City and incorporated into the model.
In addition to the facility data incorporated into the model, information for pump flow rates,
discharge pressure, and water storage levels were collected from the supervisory control and
data acquisition (SCADA) system and local hydrant pressure recorders during the testing
periods.
An elevation contour shapefile was used to extract elevations for hydrants with unknown
elevation. Elevation data was used to determine pressures throughout the distribution system
during field testing and calibration.
InfoWater® (Version 12.4) hydraulic modeling software was used for development and
calibration the water distribution system model. InfoWater® allows the City to perform both
steady state and extended period simulation (EPS) evaluations.
