Current City Code 360.32 Placement of trees in the Right -of -Way permitted varieties:
• Hackberry
• Norway Maple (invasive)
• Sugar Maple
• Red Maple
• Linden
Attachment A is a report from the DNR about the diversity of Arden Hills' urban forest. This
survey was done in 2010 but provides a snapshot of Arden Hills' species distribution. More
information about this survey can be found here:
https://www.Irl.mn.gov/docs/2012/other/120339.pdf
The DNR has informed staff that they are currently in the process of completing an updated rapid
assessment community tree survey, and those results should become publicly available within
the next few months.
Discussion
Through review of past tree lists and decisions made on tree species, Public Works has
determined that it has been too restrictive of varieties and limits the ability to modify as the
environment changes. For the Arden Hills Public Works Design Manual, it is recommended that
it states reference to the "Arden Hills Preferred Street Tree Species List" (current proposed
version can be reviewed in Attachment B), which will be a livable document to allow flexibility
for staff to modify and improve as needed.
Attachment B includes the species that are recommended for street trees and includes a column
to indicate which class or roadway they would be suitable for (largely based on salt and drought
tolerance).
Arterials, Collectors and Local Streets
Collectors and Local Streets
• Local Streets only
* At a minimum, Arden Hills will follow the "20-10-5 rule" to ensure diversification of the city's
tree canopy. The "20-10-5 rule" incorporates canopy diversity goals into planning as it requires
that no more than 20 percent of one family, 10 percent of one genera, or 5 percent of one species
be planted in a given geographic area.
Similar to the Arden Hills Public Works Design Manual, staff is requesting direction to revise
the existing City Code 360.32 Placement of trees in the Right -of -Way permitted varieties to
reflect a more modern approach. The specific language has not yet been determined but staff
would provide that if revisions were desired.
Attachment C is a list of proposed urban forestry initiatives the City Council could consider that
staff pursue if given direction. These projects would be led by the Parks & Recreation Manager
in coordination with a consultant.
Budget Impact
N/A
