UNFINISHED BUSINESS – 4C

MEMORANDUM

DATE: July 15, 2025

TO: Parks, Trails and Recreation Committee

FROM: Kerri Seemann, on behalf of Arden Hills Greening

SUBJECT: Cummings Park Planting Information

Requested Action
Informational presentation: no action required

Background

After a resident raised concerns about invasive weeds taking over areas where diseased trees and
brush were removed at Cummings Park, I created a list of suitable native plants and discussed
the plan with Public Works staff, who were supportive but noted maintenance challenges. Parks
and Recreation and Public Works staff will work to make herbicidal application and invasive
species management part of the 2026 Work Plan as they are able.

To help manage the site this year, 20 volunteers from Boston Scientific spent 28 hours in late
June removing mature burdock. With support from the Arden Hills Foundation, Alliance Tree
Care, and local plant exchange groups, we now have about 2,500 seedlings, 20 shrubs, and
rescued wildflowers ready to plant at Cummings and Chatham Trails Parks.

Attachment

Attachment A: Arden Hills Greening recommended plants, maintenance guidelines, and
suggested project goals for Cummings Park
