CITY OF ARDEN HILLS
, MEMORANDUM
DATE: January 12, 1996
TO: Mny.",d C;" Council ~
FROM: Brian Fritsinger, City Adminis a
SUBJECT: NewsletterlTown Crier
Background
During 1995, the Council agreed to disband the City Newsletter and begin work with a local
resident, Jon Hoelscher, on the writing of the Town Crier Newsletter. For whatever reason, Mr.
Hoelscher was able to publish only one edition of this revamped newsletter. Over the past
several months the City had attempted to contact Mr. Hoelscher with little response,
Councilmember Aplikowski recently discussed the newsletter with Mr. Hoelscher and may have
additional information at the meeting.
Concerns
- While the previous Newsletter had lost some of its vitality, it did provide a method to
-, communicate with local residents. It has become obvious that public announcements in the
newspaper and on Cable T.V. are not an adequate method for informing Arden Hills citizens.
1996 Budget
The City has budgeted $18,000 in 1996 to assist with the production of the Newsletter.
Options
- The Council may wish to consider the following options:
1. Create a new "Newsletter" Committee
2. Continue utilizing Jon Hoelscher
- 3. Advertise for a new local resident to write the Newsletter
4, Return to the old Newsletter format
v5. Seek outside consultant to write a new Newsletter
- 6. Prepare a "basic" Newsletter in house and include it within the Park and
Recreation Guide
I Recommendation
I Staff would recommend the Council authorize Staff to pursue the options available to the City
for producing some form of a Newsletter and report back at its earliest opportunity.
:, BF:sae
.
