I
~e CITY OF ARDEN HILLS
MEMORANDUM
I DATE: July 2, 1996
I TO: Brian Fritsinger, City Administrator
,
I FROM: Dwayne Stafford, Public "Vorks Superintendent Yr
SUBJECT: Oak Avenue Sewer Repairs
I Back!!round
The Arden Hills Public Works Department had earlier requested the City Engineer to televise
I any sanitary sewer line which lays under a street scheduled for reconstruction. Upon completion
of this process on the streets being re-constructed in 1996 it was determined that Oak A venue has
I 10 areas where the pipe has failed. Two of these are related to improper installation of service
laterals, and the others were probably caused by poor bedding in the pipe area.
I Estimated Costs for Repair
Mr. Greg Stonehouse has solicited bids from the three companies in this area who specialize in
sewer repairs made from above ground. Only two of the three companies contacted by Mr.
Ie Stonehouse submitted proposals to make the necessary repairs. Those companies were;
Infratech Infrastructure Technologies Inc.
I Brooklyn Park, Minnesota at $13,934.00
Buchen Environmental Services Inc.
I Chaska, MN at $17,535.00
Repair Methods
I Both Infratech and Buchen pull the repair materials into place with cables and use a TV camera
to align the repair precisely.
I Infratech uses a foam backed sheet of stainless steel which looks similar to a piece of stove pipe.
This is called a repair link and is available in up to three feet lengths. These links can be placed
I end to end for longer repairs. After positioning the repair link an inflatable device placed within
the repair link is pressurized thus squeezing the repair link tight against the inside of the pipe
where by design it is locked firmly in place. This seals out any soil or water infiltration. The
I repair link is approximately 1/2" thick, but beveled on the ends. This creates a 1" loss in pipe
diameter which may affect cleaning accessories designed to fit the pipe closely.
I These repairs have been known to fail on occasion as the link pipe has a tendency to slip within
the pipe, again leaving a potential problem area unprotected.
~
I
