I
I. CITY OF ARDEN HILLS
MEMORANDUM
I
DATE: July 3,1996
I TO: Brian F,ritsinger, City Administrator
k
I FROM: Dwayne Stafford, Public Works Superintendent
SUBJECT: 1996 Street Improvements; Change Order #1
I
Backl!round
I Pine Tree Drive is one of the streets scheduled for an overlay in the 1996 Street Improvements
Plan. The City Engineers having provided Ramsey County with a copy of this year's street
improvement plans, received word from the County of a possible conflict at the intersection of
I Pine Tree Drive and County Road E.
In order for the new overlay to match the existing pavement on County Road E and the existing
I curb at the edge of Pine Tree Drive, it will be necessary to mill a portion of the existing
bituminous surface. Typically a 6 foot wide swath would be made along each curb and a 12 foot
wide area would be milled where Pine Tree Drive butts up to the edge of County Road E. This
.. milling will be to a depth of approximately I 1/2 inches.
I The County has reminded the Arden Hills Public Works Department and the City Engineers that
the loop detectors which control the semaphores at this intersection, are typically buried only I
1/2 to 2 1/2 inches in the pavement and that milling this area may damage or completely destroy
I the existing detectors.
Recommendation
I The Public Works Department recommends the City Council approve Change Order #1
appropriating $7,317.40 for the replacement of the loop detectors if necessary. The Public
Works staff also recommends the City Engineer be instructed to take all precautions possible to
I protect and save the existing loop detectors, there by saving any repair or replacement costs.
I
I
I
f'
I
- -
