Backl!round The applicant has requested a Sign Standard Adjustment for a freestanding monument sign to be located at the Northwest comer of Hamline Avenue and Highway 96 on the Ramsey County Public Works Facility and Sheriff Station property. The Ramsey County property forms a large 'L' shape so the area where the buildings are located is setback about 500 feet from the main access at Hamline Avenue and Highway 96. Orillinal Sien Plans The proposed sign would be constructed of the same brick and steel materials used for the construction of the Public Works and Sheriff Station wings ofthe facility. The sign faces the southeast comer of Ham line Avenue and Highway 96 as Ramsey County anticipates that the majority of the people looking for the facility will come from those directions (the location has since changed to farther west along Highway 96 and the sign has changed from single to double- . sided so that both directions of traffic can read the sign). Plans submitted by the applicant indicate a sign with a cabinet area of 174 square feet (this has since changed to 154 square feet) with brick at the base and along the right (northeast) side ofthe sign. The main source of illumination would be internal (only the lettering would be lit) but a secondary exterior light would be make the monument sign glow at night. A mock-up full-size version of the sign was erected in the approximate location of the proposed sign on March 25, 2005. Plans for the sign are included in the attachments to this report. Staff has also included some pictures ofthe mock-up in the attached materials to allow the Planning Commission to see what the sign would look like in context. Revised Sif!n Plans On March 30, 2005 Ramsey County submitted some revised plans for Planning Commission consideration. While the plans provided do not include all of the same details as the original proposals, they do illustrate the proposed reductions to the size of the sign. In general the revised plans show a shorter monument sign (13.12 feet versus the originally proposed 15.42), smaller sign cabinet (154 square feet versus the originally proposed 174), a switch from a single sided sign facing the southeast comer of Ham line Avenue and Highway 96 to a dual-faced sign which faces the east-west direction of Highway 96.
