r / I I
~/(O
Project Summary .'
Pilgrim House has occupied its building for 24 years. The building was originatly constructed in the
1940's as J. one room schoo! house and has adiZquiltc1y served the needs of the Pilgrim House for sevt::ral I
decades. Now over 50 years old, the building is in need of work to make it more energy efficient,
structurally sound, handicapped accessible and suitable for the needs of the congregation.
53 families, or approximately 75 people currently attend Pilgrim House. This membership level represents I
steady gro\vth of 5 to 7 members per year. The long term goal of the church is for continued modest
growth to 100 members. I
A younger congregation has come to realize the shortcomings of their building's limited meeting space and
classrooms. The multi-purpose! meeting room can barely accommodate special programs, holiday
celebrations and potluck dinners. The crowded lower level classroom spaces are divided by temporary I
partirions which tack adequate noise control and interfere with safe exiting. The current gravel parking lot
is no longer adequate. Pilgrim House is no longer always welcommg and comfortable for members and
visitors.
Pilgr[m House Fellowship meets once a week on Sunday momlngs from 10:15 AM until 12:00 PM. The I
building is used occasionally outside of Sunday mornings for dinners and board and committee meetings.
No change in this level of use is planned. I
The current addition and remodeling plan would expand the size of the multl-purpose/meeting space,
el[mlnate clrculation problems and add a kitchen, office, library, nursery and restrooms on the first floor. I
A new on-grade entrance would be added at the lower level. The classrooms in the lower level would be
enlarged, a restroom and crafts area would be added. The new addition and all work to the structure's
exterior would enhance the appearance and mamtain the historic character of the buildmg.
The Current parking lot would be reduced in size and paved. A smaller bituminous parking lot would be ..
added at the on-grade entry to create a handicapped accessible entrance for the lower leveL Existing trees
and shrubs would be pruned and tr[mmed. New screen plantlngs would be added to achieve 60% opacity I
screening bet\'{een the site and residential lots,
The enlarged and improved building and parking area would allow Pilgrim House to contL'lue meeting in a I
favored, central!y located site. Its unique one room school house \vould be preserved while providing new
spaces its changmg congregation needs.
Ownership Report I
Owner & Applicant:
Pilgrim House Unitarian Fellowship I
1212 West Highway 96
P.O, Box 120813
Arden Hills, Minnesota 55112 I
Phone: 612-631-2582 Answerlng Machine
Owner's Representative: I
Mlna Adsit, AlA
3034 Benjamln Street NE
Minneapolis, M[nnesota 55418
Phone: 612-331-1244 Work I
612-788-5750 Home
Special Use Permit Amendment Application Page 2 ..
I
