I
I CITY OF ARDEN HILLS
~
MEMORANDUM
I DATE: June 30, 1997
TO: M""..... COy C...,. ~
I
FROM: Kevin Ringwald, Community Development Directo
I SUBJECT: Highway 96 Task Force request for technical expertise
I ReQuest
The City Council is requested to authorize the acquisition of technical expenise to in the areas of
signage and landscape architecture to assist the Highway 96 Task Force in its deliberations on
I possible improvements to Highway 96.
Discussion
I As the Highway 96 Task Force has discussed possible improvements to Highway 96 the
inclusion of entry way signage and landscaping has been a reoccurring theme that the Task Force
believes should be included as part of the Highway 96 improvements. Given, that Highway 96 is
.. currently being improved into Arden Hills (approximately to 1/3 of mile west of Lexington
Avenue), The Task Force believes that there is an opportunity to construct an entry way sign
I and associated landscaping at the southwest comer of Highway 96 and Lexington A venue in
1997 or 1998.
I The southwest comer of Highway 96 and Lexington Avenue has an extremely generous right of
way and could easily support the required vehicular sight lines and an entry way sign with
associated landscaping. Rams County is willing to provide the City with any excess dirt they
I may have from the project if the City should desire to place berming on this comer. Also, the
TCAAP has expressed a desire to provide numerous large spruce trees (12' to 15' in height) to the
City at no cost (except. the cost of transplanting). The Task Force wishes to use the
I opportunities which exist on this comer to create an entry way sign and landscaping which could
be used as a guide in other areas of the City (ie., southeast comer of Highway 96 and Round
Lake Road, City Parks, and/or other gateway areas). The Task Force would like to keep the cost
I of the entry way sign and associated landscaping under $30,000,
I To these ends, the Task Force at its Wednesday, June 25,1997 meeting unanimously
recommended to the City Council to acquire technical expertise in the areas of signage and
landscape architecture to assist in the design of the entry way signage and landscaping at the
I southwest comer of Highway 96 and Lexington Avenue,
t'
--
