We expressed concerns at
the time of Bethel College's proposal 10 renovate and expand its football stadium and related facilities. One . .
of the concerns we expressed was that Bethel College was relati,'ely unconcerned about the appearance of its
athletic and maintenance facilities from outside the campus. In response to these concerns, Bethel College
acted to clean up the debris and materials around Ihe slorage building at the easlern part of this area. In t#
general, Ihe College has done a fairly good job of maintaining this area.
The other point that was raised at the Planning Commission meeting was the absence of appropriale
landscaping to screen the football practice field and adjacent areas. In facl, it was noted at Ihal meeting Ihat I
such screening was a requirement of Ihe Bethel College Site Plan or applicable zoning ordinances, or both.
Although we received general assurances at the meeting that this issue would be deall with, no plantings
whatsoever have been made. The area appropriate for the plantings is apparently used as a service road. I
Without some attention to screening, the proposed slorage building extension will only aggravate the
situation by giving an industrial appearance to Ihe area, incompalible with the adjacent residential areas. As a I
condition to approval of Bethel College's application, the Planning Commission should insist on approprlate
visual screening for the storage building and Ihe athletic fields, in compliance wilh the original requirements
for these college grounds, I
Please call me prior to the Commission meeting to discuss Ihis.
I
I
S1J:cd I
E801:91737$_1 --
1
