<br /> I' - <br /> I CITY OF ARDEN HILLS <br /> " MEMORANDUM <br /> DATE: October 24, 1997 <br /> 1 TO: Mayor and City Council ~ <br /> I FROM: Brian Fritsinger, City Administrator <br /> SUBJECT: Ordinance Amending Cable Franchise Ordinance, Extension ofTcrm <br /> 1 Introduction <br /> I The Attorney representing the cities in the North Suburban Cable Commission has recommended <br /> that the cities extend the term of the franchise by about two months to allow for negotiation of <br /> final contract language with Meredith Cable. An ordinance that will extend the term of the <br /> 1 franchise until January 19, 1998 has been included for Council consideration. <br /> Background <br /> 1 In the 1982, the City of Arden Hills, along with nine other cities in the north suburban area <br /> awarded a franchise to Group W Cable for the operation of a cable franchise for a fifteen year <br /> period. For the past three years, the North Suburban Cable Commission has been involved in <br /> Ie preparing new cable franchises on behalf of its member cities. <br /> After several months of negotiation, the North Suburban Cable Commission recently <br /> I recommended that a franchise renewal proposal from Meredith Cable be accepted. The <br /> Commission directed tllat the Attorney and Executive Director of the Commission develop final <br /> franchise language with representatives of Meredith Cable. That process is moving forward, but <br /> I it will take another two months to complete. Once it is completed, the Cable Commission will <br /> recommend a final franchise to the member cities for review, consideration and adoption. To <br /> 1 accommodate this process, the Commission and Meredith Cable have agreed to an extension of <br /> the franchise to January 18, 1998. <br /> 1 Attached is an ordinance that would amend Cable Franchise Ordinance No. 226 to extend the <br /> term of the existing franchise agreement to January 18, 1998. <br /> 1 Recommendation <br /> Based on the foregoing information, it is recommended that the City Council adopt Ordinance <br /> No. 302, An Ordinance Amending Cable Franchise Ordinance No. 226, Article II, Section 4, <br /> 1 Franchise Term. <br /> BF IsIs <br /> 1 <br /> - <br /> 1 <br />
