Genesis Architecture
RE: North Heights Lutheran Church Addition, Arden Hills
I The following is a review of the decision making process regarding the material selection for the
gymnasium exterior. In addition there is attached a rendering for the Council's reference and
elevation of the proposed compromise determined by NHLC and city staff.
I Initially we were looking at brick throughout the exterior of the addition. But we had two main
'.
concerns:
one - the monotony of a single materiai without same sort of relief.
I two - because of the open two story nature of the gymnasium is there a mare
efficient, appropriate material.
I The alternate materials under consideration were CMU or architectural precast concrete panels.
It was during this time that we needed to provide the city with plans and elevations to continue the
approval process. Consequently the elevations submitted indicated "brick and other similar
materials to match".
Ie It was determined that CMU was not appropriate as it did not occur anywhere else on the building
elevation. The architectural precast offered the ability to apply a brushed finish that would be
I similar to the stucco texture on the northwest side of the sanctuary space. Horizontal reveals are
added to match existing to strengthen this relationship with the existing.
I Another important factor was the durability of the interior surface for the activities typical of a
gymnasium. Brick would require a separate structural system and interior surfacing,
Because of the misunderstanding between the City and NHLC regarding the materials to be
I applied on the gym exterior we met with the Planning Commission ,as part of the resubmiltal
process. At this meeting it was determined that there should be some brick applied to the gym
exterior with the precast panels to be painted to match the brick.
I Working with the city staff we determined that brick applied to the reveals was an appropriate
compromise. This, in addition to the coniferous trees that were relocated to help screen the
I building from Highway 10, should mitigate any concerns the public might have.
It is our contention that architectural precast concrete is the most appropriate material for the
space usage and provides a needed relief to the building elevation. It is in the spirit of
I compromise that we have worked with the city and would hope that they will respond in turn.
I cc: Mike Schraad - Welsh Construction
..
I 8200 Normandale Boulevard' Suite 200 .
