I" ..
I CITY OF ARDEN HILLS
.- MEMORANDUM
DATE: December 3, 1997
I TO: Brian Fritsinger, City Administrator
I FROM: Dwayne Stafford, Public Works Superintendent ~S"
,
SUBJECT: Lift Station #11
. Back!!round
I The City of Arden Hills currently has 14 sewage lift stations spread throughout the City. Lift
stations are typically constructed in low areas of a City and sewer main lines surrounding the low
area will be constructed to flow to the lift station. The lift station then pumps the sewage up hill
I to a higher sewer main where the sewage continues it's trek toward the MCES waste treatment
plant, sometimes via other lift stations along the line.
I Lift stations are a daily maintenance item. Cities typically use them only as a last resort and will
eliminate them whenever feasible. The Public Works Superintendent estimated the average cost
for Lift Station #11 each year for electricity and maintenance would be about $4,500, which does
re not include repair parts.
Highwav 96 Reconstruction
I Segment #1 of the Highway 96 reconstruction is scheduled to begin in 1998 or 1999. While
working with BRW Engineers the Public Works Staff realizes that Lift Station #11 may have to
. be moved to accommodate the west bound lane realignment near Arden Manor Mobile Home
Park.
I This lift station is at the south entrance to Arden Manor on Prior Avenue. The Public Works
Superintendent estimates the cost to move this lift station and the piping connected to it, to be
$75,000, which the County would pay.
. Feasibility Reouest
Public Works Employees have asked the City Engineer to detennine if elevations of the existing
I lift station incoming sewer lines, are at a higher elevation than the new sewer line being
constructed on Round Lake Road. Mr. Brown, the City Engineer has checked these elevations in
as built drawings and it appears that it may be possible to eliminate Lift Station # 11 by installing
. a gravity pipe from the existing Lift Station to the new sewer line on Round Lake Road at 14th
Avenue. These elevations would need to be verified on the field, as there is no room for error
I according to as built drawing information. The new gravity line necessary to eliminate Lift
Station #11 would either be constructed in the new Round Lake Road or possibly in an existing
sewer easement on the west side of Round Lake between the lake and the commercial buildings
,. on Round Lake Road.
I
