12 <br />The meanderplantsurveying was broken out by unit, allowing each unit to be characterized as unique <br />woodland systemsowing to different vegetation characteristics within each unit. Taken as a whole, Floral <br />Park could be classified into a combination of the following MN DNR ecosystem types: Southern Mesic Oak- <br />Basswood or Maple-Basswood Forest (MHs38 and MHs39), Central Mesic or Wet-Mesic Hardwood Forest <br />(MHc36and MHc47), and Southern Dry Mesic Oak-Maple Woodland (FDs37). Currently,though, Floral <br />Park’s ecosystem can be characterized as wet to mesic hardwood forest, apartfrom the wetlands and <br />powerline unit.Future maintenance efforts should aim to guide the park’s plant communities towards any of <br />the mesic hardwood systems (MHprefix). <br />Restoration Objectives Overview <br />The woody invasive population reduction from 2023 through 2025in Floral Park will allow forfurther <br />restoration efforts due to the increased accessibility in throughout the understory as well as increased light <br />penetration to the ground in those areas for habitat regeneration from the existing seedbank. Further <br />invasive woody species management, focused on the expansive amur maple (Acer ginnala) stand in the <br />southeastern portion of the park’s woodland as well as continued buckthorn and honeysuckle <br />management, will be required. <br />Long term maintenance of the site will likely involve periodic shrub layer thinning via mechanical removal <br />and goat browsing meanwhile native species populations can be stimulated with periodic prescribed fire. <br />Additionally, seeding efforts into the eastern portion of the woodland where much of the buckthorn has been <br />removed and openings in the ground layer are expansive will help to establish a dense understory and shrub <br />layer that can replace and outcompete buckthorn. Volunteers can assist with both invasive woody control <br />and planting/ seeding. Section 3 provides detailed recommended tasks and timeline, with recommended <br />species lists for seeding and planting in Appendices A and B.
