16
3.a. Summary of Park Goals and General ManagementRecommendations
The parks described for management are all unique but have typical Minnesotan habitat types that describe
their main attributes which can be used to outline the main proposed management tasks.
Table 3.a.1. General Native Plant Community Goals
Park(Specific Areas in Cells)
Target Native Plant Communities Hazelnut Park Floral Park Chatham Park
Mesic Woodland (MHs37,38, 39, and MHc36
and 47)5.5ac W 1.1ac, SE 5.3ac, and
SW 1.5ac
Southern Mesic Prairie/ Savanna(UPs23 and
24)Power line 0.5ac
Floodplain Forest (FFs59)N 6.1ac Priority Area 6ac
and entire site
Natural resources management has been initiated by the city and community volunteers over the past 5-10
years. The work has been focused on, but not limited to, buckthorn hand cutting and removal from 2020
through 2022 in the main north woodland in Chatham Park, invasive species hand pulling focused on garlic
mustard, and a labeled-planting of native grasses and forbs establishing along the trail edge of the South
Woodland.Through cityefforts, the Arden Hills Parks Trails and Recreation Committee, and neighborhood
groups such as Arden Hills Greening, funding was received by Great River Greening from the Outdoor
Heritage Fund, as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature, to facilitate the design and
implementation of the following proposed goals and tasks.
Table 3.a.2 Main Management Recommendations
Site Name Acres Long-term
Management Goal
Recommended Actions Notes
Hazelnut
Park
5.5 Buckthorn control,
native understory
establishment
Periodic shrub layer thinning/
targeted cutting; native species
seeding/ planting
Seeding native forbs and grasses
should be prioritized, promoting
the expansion of extant
populations and inhibiting
buckthorn population rebound.
Floral Park
Woodland
13 Buckthorn control,
native understory
establishment
Periodic shrub layer thinning/
targeted cutting of invasive
trees; native species seeding/
planting
Seeding/ planting natives should
begin shortly after contract work
is completed to inhibit other
invasive species proliferation.
Floral Park
Powerline
Prairie
0.5 Right-of-way native
prairie establishment
Continued maintenance mowing,
woody foliar herbicide
application to control black
locust expansion.
Black locust should not be
controlled by mowing as this
encourages expansion.
Chatham
Park
6 Buckthorn control,
native understory
establishment
Periodic shrub layer thinning for
maintenance; continued targeted
cutting of remaining buckthorn
stand; native species seeding
Seeding should focus on offering
alternative food sources for
avians.
The following section contains specific recommendations for the execution of management objectives for
the named areas within each park in this document. The land in each of these areas is part of an altered
urbanecosystem. As such, the recommendations for restoration are based on visual assessments of the
sites and mapped soil conditions, with the understanding that they will not be fully restored to a native plant
