. IX. DEVELOPMENT DETAILS
A. Expected Use/Activities - the trail corridor will provide for the following
recreation and protection open space functions:
1, Recreation Open Space
a. Trails - canoeing, biking, walking, jogging, in-line skating and cross-
country skiing (including trailheads).
b. Pet Exercise Area - unleashed running and training of dogs,
2, Protection Open Space - floodplain protection, steep slope stabilization,
waterfowl and wildlife sanctuary,
B. Concept
Refer to Development Concept Plan on page IX-4.
C. Facility Description
Generally, the Rice Creek North Regional Trail Corridor is a natural
greenway that runs between the Rice Creek-Chain of Lakes Regional Park
. Reserve in Uno Lakes and Long Lake Regional Park in New Brighton
following the channel and floodway of Rice Creek, Although the corridor is
linear by nature, it is physically divided into three distinct segments by
intersecting roadways.
The rolling grasslands, wooded patches, winding creek, broad floodplain and
pocket marshes of the contiguous segments provide an interesting and
aesthetic mosaic for the trailway. This multi-use trail corridor will provide
recreational trail opportunities for canoeing, biking, walking, jogging, in-line
skating and cross-country skiing, In addition to the terminal trailheads at the
Rice Creek-Chain of Lakes Regional Park Preserve and Long Lake Regional
Park, three intermittent trailheads will be provided at segment perimeters off
Lexington Avenue, County Road I and Old Highway 8,
Proposed site development will not destroy, damage nor significantly alter
any wetland, woodland or wildlife habitat. Except for the immediate paved
trailway and trailheads, the corridor will be managed in a natural or
"unmanicured" condition.
The following description is based on the scenario that the Arden Hills
segment will be acquired and all "fragment distance" restrictions will be
waived or mitigated,
.
IX-l
