Walsh, Parks and Recreation Director _ --' /:J SUBJECT: Purchasing Playground Structures at Freeway and Cummings Parks Back~round New Playground structure equipment was planned for both Freeway and Cummings Parks in 1998. Cummings Park was planned as a replacement for this year. The Freeway Park structure was moved up to 1998 because of a donation from the Romanian Orthodox Church charitable gambling organization. Selection of Eq uipmen t There were four companies that developed proposals for each park area. The Parks and Recreation Commission and I met with the residents from each park to get feed back on which proposal they like best. I also met with the parks and recreation staff to have them review the . proposals. The proposals from Miracle Recreation Equipment Company were chosen for both of the park sites. The City does have an existing structure from Miracle at Valentine Park. We have been pleased with their equipment. Cost of Equipment and Budget Implications There is $35,000 budgeted in the General Fund Park Maintenance Budget from the equipment at Cummings Park. The budgeted money includes the cost of equipment, timbers around the strueture, wood fiber, sand and other surface material, and ADA access pathway. Depending on the cost and quantity of cement and mixer rental, I am anticipating the cost to be $34,500. Freeway Park has $16,000 budgeted for a smaller structure. This money was budgeted in the Park Fund since it was donated by the Romanian Orthodox Church. I anticipate spending all of that money. Recommendation Staff recommends purchasing playground equipment and assessories at Freeway for $16,000 and Cummings Parks for of$35,000. With Council approval, I plan to order the equipment the week of March 9 since there is a 4-6 week delivery time. The timbers, surface material, cement, etc... will be ordered at the time of installation. .
