I
. CITY OF ARDEN HILLS
MEMORANDUM
DATE: April 17,1998
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: Brian Fritsinger, City Administrato~
SUBJECT: 1998 Retreat Summary/Philosophy Statement
Background
The City Council, as part of its April 10, 1998 Non-Agenda packet, received the draft report
from the City Council/Department Head Retreat. At that time, I had asked the City Council for
any feedback related to this document. I was not made aware of any suggested changes to this
document, nor has the draft been reviewed by the Department Heads.
What's Next?
The City Council and Department Heads should now review this information, and discuss how it
intcnds to use and/or promote the philosophy statement and/or goals. In addition, I will have
. Team Works provide a final bound copy to the City which can then be distributed to everyone.
I would propose that the Department Heads and Council begin by reviewing together the final
actions that were discussed on the final day of the Retreat. Upon conclusion of this conversation,
staff will be solicited for input on how these affect the budget, goals, workload, etc.
While there are many components of the Retreat that could warrant future public discussion, the
philosophy statement is the most obvious result of the Retreat that needs to be discussed first.
The report prepared by TeamWorks identifies the philosophy statement, but does not necessarily
provide some of the support information which should accompany this statement as it is
promoted by the City.
Once the message to be delivered is clarified, staff will begin using the statement in several
different arenas. These would include press releases, newsletter, and other media opportunities.
We will then begin using this philosophy as we develop our 1999 Budget and associated
materials.
Requested Action
The City Council is asked to review the 1998 Retreat summary with the Department Heads, and
clarify the intended use of the philosophy statement.
BF /sls
.
