Lois Rem
Supplement to Application for Appointment to the City Council
June 11, 1998
.
1. Employment, occupation, or other experience (qualifications & accomplishments)thatwould assist
you in performing the functions of an Arden Hills council member.(Please attach resume, if current
& available.)
My employment has been almost entirely public sector and non-profit. My first full-time job was a
two-year stint as a clerk for the City of Bloomington's utilities and public works departments.
Since then I have worked primarily at the University, longest in legal services but also in various
academic and administrative offices. My employment has been and currently is chiefly "support";
my job includes duties as a computer services specialist, network administrator, and legal
secretary/assistant (for which I attend continuing education). I believe my employment experience
has enhanced my awareness of the range of issues facing city government and the various means by
which these issues can and sometimes must be faced, (My resume is attached to this Application.)
3. Please state your reasons for wanting to serve as an Arden Hills council member. (Attach extra
sheets as needed.)
My interest in serving on Council comes primarily from my experiences with my own neighbors
and contacts with others throughout the conununity. For many residents, their only personal
involvement beyond basic staff contacts tends to occur during assessment hearings or in connection
with nonstandard permit requests. I believe the Council, staff, and residents would benefit from
better communication on all sides, and I would like to help build consensus and improved
. communications throughout the community, I have a long-standing interest in and familiarity with
a wide range of city issues that would help me become effective quickly, I also believe I have a
basic understanding of the concerns and goals of Council and staff., My interest in serving on
Council includes my intention to run for election this fall.
4. Please attach any other pertinent infornlation, Also list other areas of civic, professional &
community involvement which may be applicable. (Attach extra sheets as needed.)
My earliest interests in community issues have been for environmental causes, I am also involved
in social serviccs through my job, church, and community groups, Currently I am a rncmber ofthe
Arsenal (TCAAP) Restoration Advisory Board (RAB), League of Women Voters (Arden Hills/
Shoreview), Audubon Society (St. Paul chapter), along with other enviroruncntal groups, and I
participate in the Episcopal Public Policy Network. I also volunteer at the Ralph Reeder Food
Shelf as an individual and in conjunction with the Pilgrim House Fellowship, I recently organized
Glenview Court into an official "neighborhood watch" with the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office.
I am fortunate to live in a neighborhood with a real sense of conm1l1nity and shared values and
concerns, My neighbors are a constant source of education and encouragement. While I enjoy
participating in groups and events including the Arden Hills book club and our neighborhood
annual picnic, I especially appreciate the opportunities I have to meet and visit with ~y neighbors
who stop to visit while I work in my gardens and who, in turn, invite me into Iheir gardens when I
walk through the neighborhood. It is because of my regard for these people and their .eoncerns that
I have spent, and will continue to spend, my Monday and Wednesday evenings attending and
reporting on City Council and Planning Commission meetings.
.
