CITY OF ARDEN HILLS
. MEMORANDUM
DATE: August 4,1998
TO: Brian Fritsinger
FROM: Dwayne Stafford ~)
SUBJECT: Emergency Generator Replacement
Back~round
The City of Arden Hills currently owns one emergency generator capable of powering any ofthe
City's 14 sewer lift stations, in the event of a power outage. This unit is 21 years old, but seems
to be in good condition and has worked well. Although typically used less than six times a year,
it is one of the most important pieces of equipment the City owns, For example, the City's most
active lift station at Hamline Avenue and Ingerson Road cannot be without power longer than Y,
hour during peak periods before sewer backups start to occur at nearby homes. The remaining
stations can go from 2 to 24 hours, depending on the area served. This year, on one occasion, all
14 lift stations were without power during one event, and eight were down on another. These
situations necessitate moving the generator from station to station until power is restored.
. New Generator
In 1995, Public Works had identified the emergency generator for replacement in 1998 and had
budgeted $35,000 for the replacement. Due to the age of the current generator, Public Works
estimates its value to be less than $5,000. Under these conditions and the chance that Council
may elect to install an emergency power receptacle on the new City Hall, the Public Works
Department asks that Public Works be allowed to keep the old generator for additional backup
and purchase a new generator.
Recommendation
The City of Arden Hills Public Works Director recommends Council's approval to advertise for
bids for the purchase of one trailer-mounted 100kW Emergency Generator Set. The Director
also recommends Council's approval to keep the 1976 vintage generator.
.
- -----.-.--
