~ )Cij\~~ Y'5
. I. OVERVIEW
The major transportation network in Arden Hills is made up of metropolitan
freeways and County roads. The system provides access to other parts of the
metro area and the state, but also divides the community. The design,
maintenance, upgrades and traffic controls all impact the community immensely.
Arden Hills has several transportation challenges. Generally they are to provide
access and mobility, to not overburden local streets and to maintain a safe
community. The City will need to work closely with the state and regional
agencies and be involved in decisions that affect the community.
The I-35W Corridor Coalition was developed to address transportation and other
issues in a sub-regional context. With I-35W being the common element amongst
the communities, transportation is an issue that is currently being addressed by the
Coalition.
Locally, Arden Hills would like to create a Parkway system, with the existing
connector streets in the community. The concept is to improve the visual image
and safety of the streets through design improvements and enhance the entrances
to the community by designing "gateways". The other challenge is to keep ahead
of maintenance issues as streets in the community age. Managing the timing and
. costs of maintenance and improvements is vital to keeping neighborhoods strong.
II. GOALS AND POLICIES
Overall Goal: Maintain and improve transportation facilities
1. Provide roadway and pedestrian linkages to ensure access and mobility
throughout the City.
2. Coordinate transportation plans with the State, County, the North Metro I35W ,
Corridor Coalition, Metropolitan Council and other agencies to assure system
continuity, determine priorities and save resources.
3. Minimize direct access from private property onto collectors and arterial
streets to allow fewer disruptions to through traffic.
4. Manage traffic in residential neighborhoods to not overburden any particular
street.
City of Arden Hills Comprehensive Plan Page 76
.
