37

Community Announcement

An Internal Communication Bulletin from the President

PARKING COMMUNICATION

Over the last several months I have heard from countless numbers of students and employees about the
serious parking problem we are facing. Many of you have been late to class after having driven all
around the campus in search of a parking space. Visitors corning to the campus to speak in classes,
attend meetings, or visit students are unable to find a place to park during peak class times. Currently
there is a need for 40 to 60 additional spaces during this time.

I have asked my executive leadership team to look into this problem and identify some solutions. They
have researched other area colleges, consulted with administrators and student leaders, and gathered
feedback leading to the implementation of some new parking initiatives that will begin in the fall of
1999. We have struggled long and hard over this situation and think the following initiatives will help
relieve current problems.

.Freshmen will not be allowed to have cars on campus. For special needs a small number of
spaces will be allotted and available by appeal.

.The existing tennis courts, already being considered for relocation, will now be converted to a
parking lot that will provide 120 additional spaces. (New tennis courts will be built on one of
two identified locations.)

.Shuttle service will be expanded to allow for increased student needs.

.Car-pooling incentives are being implemented for faculty and staff.

. A vehicle registration fee of $40 per semester, will be implemented for all students. This
registration fee, similar to that levied at other area schools, will be used for purposes such as:
increased shuttle service, lot security, and the construction and maintenance of new and
existing parking lots.

We are confident that the above initiatives should help to relieve the current parking problems. I have
asked Bruce Kunkel, vice president for campus services, at extension 6431 and Judy Moseman, vice
president for student life, at extension 6300, to help answer questions or concerns related to these
initllitives. Following Interim, I Wll1Oehostifig an open meetingrmadministratorsiodialog with
students and the new parking initiatives will be one of the items on the agenda for that discussion time.

~I(~

Thursday, December 10, 1998

A Bulletin from the Office of Communications
