<br />e <br /> <br />CITY OF ARDEN HILLS <br /> <br />MEMORANDUM <br /> <br />DATE: May 8, 2000 <br /> <br />TO: Joe Lynch, City Administrator <br /> <br />FROM: Dwayne Stafford, Public Works Director ~ <br /> <br />SUBJECT: County Road I, Pre Construction Meeting <br /> <br />Backl:round <br />The City of Arden Hills earlier approved County plans for the reconstruction of County <br />Road I, from just west ofI-35W east approximately Yz mile to Schutta Road. The project <br />became necessary with the City of Shore view's development of Wisp ark, between <br />County Road I and County Road J on the east side ofI-35W. No costs to the City of <br />Arden Hills have been identified. <br /> <br />e <br /> <br />Citv Reauests <br />Following review ofthe preliminary plans, the Arden Hills City Engineer drafted a letter <br />to the Ramsey County Engineer, Jim Tolaas, encouraging the County to award bid <br />Alternate #1 as part of the project. This alternate is for a pedestrian tunnel under County <br />Road I east of the new vehicle bridge over Rice Creek. The letter also encouraged the <br />County to widen the proposed new vehicle bridge over Rice Creek, to provide room for <br />pedestrian traffic on the south side of the bridge. <br /> <br />Countv ResDonse <br />When asked ifthe County had considered the Arden Hills requests, Mr. Tolaas indicated <br />there is not enough right-of-way to extend the vehicle bridge to the south to provide for <br />pedestrian traffic on the Arden Hills side. There will be a walkway on the north side <br />(Shoreview) ofthe bridge. <br /> <br />Mr. Tolaas also stated that funding problems have prevented the County from including <br />the Alternate pedestrian tunnel from being awarded at this point, but Mr. Tolaas is <br />seeking additional funds from the County for that Alternate. <br /> <br />e <br /> <br />Proiect Schedulinl! <br />Amt Construction Inc. was awarded the rroject and expects to begin preliminary utility <br />relocation and some grading by May 16' . A detour necessary for replacing the Rice <br />Creek Bridge will not start until June 9th, to allow school buses to finish out the school <br />year on the old bridge. The new bridge should be opened for two lanes by August 14th, <br />and the project is scheduled for completion on October 15, 2000. <br />
