-1 0 tv1

tit

Alertlll No Valentine Hills Ice Rink This Winterl?!

Tom Moore who is the Arden Hills Director of Parks and Recreation has made a preliminary
decision that there will be no Valentine Park Skating Rink again this year. This is a
preliminary decision, but unless we contact Tom ASAP to object, this will be his final
decision.

Who you should contact:
Tom Moore 651-633-5676 or e-mail atcityhall@cLarden-hills.mn.us
It is important to contact Tom directly. He has stated that no one called him about
the rink last year which shows a lack of interest.

Tom has two reasons for not continuing the many year tradition (except for lost year) of
having a skating rink at Valentine Pork:

1. Tom's first reason is that in prior years there was not enough usage of the rink to
justify the expense.

e

Our neighborhood response to this statement has been: (a) the demographics of the
neighborhood has chonged and there are many more families with young children moving in
recently; and (b) if it is too expensive to keep the warming house open, perhaps the warming
house should only be open on the weekends.

2. Tom's second reason is that the rink in Valentine Park is difficult to maintain due to the
slope of the landscape.

Our neighborhood response to this statement has been: this maintenance issue was not a
problem in the past and we have had a skating rink at Valentine Park for many years. As you
may recall. several years ago the City built a new warming house for Valentine Park, so if
the rink had been problemotic, it is unclear why the warminng house had been built.

Your can.also contact the following individuals:
Lois Rem 651-636-0159
Bev Aplikowsi (Bev used to live in our neighborhood and she supports the Valentine skating
rink as an important asset to our neighborhood.) - Check with CitY for number.
Park and Recreation Committee members - Check with City for numbers.

You can also feel free to e-mail (fholmes@dttus.com) or call Fran Holmes (651-631-1866) to
discuss further. Tom Moore has indicated that he is willing to meet with residents of our
neighborhood to discuss. Let Fran know if you are interested in a meeting with Tom.

e
