Arden Hills General Account

From:
Sent:
To:
Subject:

Kim Dietrick [kdietrick@mediaone.net]
Monday, Augusl 21, 20008:55 AM
cityhall@ci.arden-hills.mn.us
Valentine Hills Ice Rink

.

Date: August 21, 2000

To: Tom Moore

Subject: Valentine Hills Ice Rink

Mr. Moore,

It has come to my attention that you are considering not having a skating rink at Vaientine Park again this year. Here are
my thoughts on the subject.

1. You are correct. 1 did not contact you last year when a skating rink was not created at Valentine Park. My assumption
was that the Arden Hills Park & Recreation department did not have their act together in getting the rink in place, due
in large part to the warm winter weather. 1 assumed that this was a one time event that the department would make
sure did not happen again.
2. And yes, the skating rink has not been the best since Valentine Park was "updated" a number of years ago. When my
oldest two (now teenagers) were younger, they spent every afternoon and weekend ice skating at Valentine. At that
time there were fewer elementary age children in the neighborhood than there are now. (I have a 9 year old child, so I
know the neighborhood kids.) The reason you are seeing fewer kids at the rink is that the rink is often in poor skating
condition. 1 would like to suggest that the Park and Rec department put more effort into maintaining a well groomed .
skating rink and you will attract more kids and families. If the layout of the rink since the "update" makes the ice rink
problematic, fix the problem. Please don't walk away from it at the expense of the kids, families and neighborhood.
3. I know your decision may come down to budget. Budget to fix the rink layout and budget to pay for the rink attendant.
Please know that there are a number of Arden Hills residents that will support money being used to keep Valentine
Park a healthy, usable park for everyone to enjoy.

I hope you will reconsider your preliminary decision to cancel the ice rink at Valentine Park. Many children and their
families are looking forward to skating in the neighborhood this winter and many winters to come.

Sincerely,

Kim Dietrick

1785 Venue Avenue

Arden Hills, MN

e

1
