Arden Hills General Account

From:
Sent:
To:
Subject:

Wilson, Kristine J [KristineWilson@UNISYS.com]
Friday, August 18, 2000 1 :04 PM
'cityhall@ci.arden-hills.mn.us'
Alln: Tom Moore - Valentine Park ice rink

e

Tom,

Thanks for talking with me this morning about the Vaientine Park ice rink
and scout projects. Below is a copy of what I had already sent to Fran
Holmes on the rink topic. I'm forwarding it to you as well since it
provides a written summary of our discussion.

Regards,
Kris Wilson

Fran,
As you know my two children, Aian and Janelle, have enjoyed the ice rink
every year since they were 2 or 3 years old, Often they may not have been
counted in recent years. This is because they are older, 17 and 14, and
their schedules often do not permit them to skate until after the official
closing time. Aian especially has several friends in the neighborhood (Dan
Taverneir, Joe Turgeon) and others from outside the neighborhood (notably
Wilder Freed who used to live on Gramsie) who liked to get together for
impromptu games. Obviously the lack of the warming house doesn't stop them!

I know one of the other complaints of Park & Rec was that there weren't
enough oider kids willing to work the warming house. Last year was the
first year these boys were old enough. They were disappointed they couldn't
work close to home. Instead Alan and Wilder worked at Freeway park and
Cummmings.

Many of you know that our family also hosts an annual ice skating party for
my co-workers and their families. This is held on about the 3rd Saturday in
January. We arrange to get the key for the warming house and take
responsibility for the rink that night. Skating for the party is typically
from about 7pm to 9pm - after normal closing hours. Neighborhood children
are also welcome to skate if they show up. Last year my guests were very
disappointed to find the rink wasn't available. While we arranged to use
Freeway park instead, guests with young children didn't want to bundle them
up and make yet another trip away from the house. At Valentine they can
walk down - with one or both parents staying at the house to visit (our
children and other adults who want to skate provide supervision).

We cleariy support the maintenance of a rink at Valentine Park!

Kris and Craig Wiison

P.S. We don't buy the landscape argument. There was not such a problem
until the city moved the ball diamond and made related changes at the park
in the last few years.

e

e

1
