'--' i

February 20, 2001

Dear Mr. Lynch:

It has come to my attention that Walgreens has petitioned the City of Arden Hills to allow
it to build a pharmacy at the comer of Lexington and County Road E. As a resident and
voter, I am writing to register my disapproval. I am an avowed capitalist and believe
competition works in the best interest of the buyer and seller. On the other side of the
coin, one ofthe reasons I reside in Arden Hills is the quality of life amenities one doesn't
find in most metropolitan areas.

.

The traffic at that comer, during the evening rush hour, has become a major nuisance.
Should a train be crossing Lexington, one can be tied up for quite a while. I find myself
turning left out of my driveway and heading towards Roseville to do my shopping at that
time of day. Adding a high volume chain drug store will only make it worse.

Returning to the quality of life issue, I enjoy having access to the family owned
businesses at Arden Plaza. I'm not sure the area could support another pharmacy. For
those who desire a discount chain store type of pharmacy, we have Target just down the
road. The personal service provided by Arden Pharmacy may seem like an anachronism
in the a world that has become used to listening to "please hold your call is very
important to us", but to me it's part of the charm of living in Arden Hills.

I don't believe I get to vote on this, but I do want to be heard. Arden Hills is a unique
and wonderful community. We have a nice place to live and raise a family, where the
people in the local stores recognize you and are glad to be of service. Let's not raise the
congestion level and drive our local merchants out of business in the name of progress.

Sincerely,

..-
L

..-r..---....~,-

,

.

Cc: Ma r Dennis Probst, Bev Aplikowski, David Grant, Greg Larson, Lois Rem
