".

,

.

~
~HILLS

CITY OF ARDEN HILLS

MEMORANDUM

DATE: October 8, 2001

TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
Joe Lynch, City Administrator

FROM: Aaron Parrish, City Planner

SUBJECT: Case #01-23, Sign Ordinance
City of Arden Hills

.

I.
2.
3.
4.
5.
. 6.
7.

Overview

Attached is the Planning Commission's recommendation for a new sign code for your review. The
proposed ordinance reflects an effort to simplify the sign code for residents, business owners, the
Planning Commission, the City Council, and staff.

As Council is aware, a significant amount of time and effort was put into drafting the new ordinance.
This included several meetings with the "Sign Working Group," and three meetings of the Planning
Commission. Additionally, interested business owners/members of the community were provided
several opportunities to provide input. A Public Hearing was also conducted at the October Planning
Commission meeting. No comments were received at that time.

Generally, the proposed sign ordinance divides the City into nine overlay districts for signage
regulation. These districts include:

All residential properties zoned R-l or R-2.

All non-residential uses in any residential R-1 through R-4 zoning district.

All residential properties zoned R-3 and R-4.

All properties fronting on Lexington Avenue South ofI-694.

All properties fronting on County Road E east of Highway 51.

All properties zoned for commercial or industrial use fronting on Lexington A venue north
ofl-694, Highway 96, or located in a B-1 zoning district.

All properties in the I Flex, Gateway Business, or other commercial or industrial district
