ARDEN HILLS PLANNING COMMISSION - APRIL 3, 2002

11

Commissioner Duchenes stated they had a fairly large sign now and asked if this would .
take up more area than what they had now. Mr. Parrish stated the current sign was 12
feet high, but he was not sure in terms of area if it was any larger.

Chair Sand asked if this sign complied with the setback requirements. Mr. Parrish replied
the proposed sign would comply with the set back requirements,

Chair Sand asked if the logos represented were allowable. Mr. Parrish replied the logos
were allowed.

Chair Sand asked why staff limited it to three tenants. Mr. Parrish replied the point
would be that if an additional tenant came on, the sign would not be cluttered, He
indicated at this time however, they did not have a requirement as to the amount of
verbiage on a sign.

Chair Sand asked where the sixteen-foot height was measured. Mr. Parrish replied it was
measured from the base of the sign to the top of the sign.

Chair Sand asked if they made any accounting for the base, Mr. Parrish replied he did
not believe there were any requirements regarding the base and how the sign should be
measured,

Commissioner Bezdicek asked about the illumination of the sign, Mr. Parrish replied the .
sign would be backlit.

Chair Sand asked if the names would be backlit, or if it would be the whole sign be
backlit. The Sign Designer replied it would only be the names and addresses, not the
whole sign.

Commissioner Duchenes moved, seconded by Commissioner Zimmerman, to approve
Case #01-28, Catholic Aid Association Sign Standard Adjustment, based on the
following findings and following conditions:

1. The sign adjustment will allow a sign of exceptional design or a style that will
enhance the area or that is more consistent with the architectural and design of the
site.

2. The sign adjustment will not result in a sign that is inconsistent with the purpose
of the zoning district in which the property is located.

3. Sign copy being limited to three occupants and address numbers.

4. Sufficient landscape being provided to conceal the concrete base of the sign as
approved by staff.

5,

Compliance with the Zoning Code and Sign Ordinance.

.

Chair Sand inquired if staff would be monitoring the landscaping placed around the sign.
Mr. Parrish replied this would be looked at when the sign permit was requested.
