She said <br />the transportation department would send out letters to residents that week as to <br />whether they are in or out of the 2-mile limit. <br /> <br />Council Member Grant expressed his concern for bussing more students, further <br />away, and suggested Irondale has more capacity. <br /> <br />Council Member Larson said although this policy does put the City Council at a <br />disadvantage, the safety issue is paramount. <br /> <br />Ms. Bollum said the clear fact in this matter is there is no funding, and the trade- <br />off is increasing class sizes. <br /> <br />Council Member Aplikowski asked what the current class SIzes were, and if <br />crossing guards were being utilized. <br /> <br />Ms. Bollum said the high school averages were 36-39 students per class, middle <br />school 30-35, and elementary was 20-29. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Accountant Post asked if Community Education programs could provide some <br />funding, to which Ms. Bollum replied, "No." <br /> <br />Council Member Grant said other cities have adopted this 2-mile walk, but Arden <br />Hills does not have any sidewalks, which ultimately puts kids on the street and at <br />risk. <br /> <br />Council Member Larson asked if there had there been discussion of closing any <br />schools. <br /> <br />Dr. Witthuhn replied that because neighborhoods were spread out all over, the <br />district was locating offices in schools, and the result was to maximize space, and <br />not close a school. <br /> <br />Council Member Grant suggested Moundsview High School could not provide 200 <br />more parking spots, and stated he though there would be an increase of parking on <br />City Streets. <br /> <br />. <br />
