We also understand that the 276 acres requested by the
National Guard will be transferred to them, The Friends are strongly
supportive of these transfers,

What is in question is the 49 acre wildlife corridor connecting the area
licensed to the National Guard to the east and the Rice Creek eorridor to the
west. This eonneetion was one of the reeommendations in the Vento Plan,

According to Joan Galli, Nongame Wildlife Specialist with the Minnesota
DNR,

"Recently, Arden Hills city officials have been lobbying the federal
government to release all of the remaining acreage for redevelopment, The
city's redevelopment plans stray from the Vento plan by including the 276
acres requested by the Guard and the 49-acre connecting parcel.
Preservation of these two parcels in a natural state is critical to the site's role
as an ecological hub connecting several regionally significant natural areas,
and it would still leave about 600 acres available for redevelopment,

Protection of these key parcels amounts to a rare, now-or-never opportunity

http://www.friendsoftheparks.org/TCAAPmain.html

9/612002
