.

.

~
~HILLS

MEMORANDUM

DATE:

Agenda Item 2. C

January 14, 2004

TO:

Mayor and City Council ~
Peter Hellegers, City Planne~fV

Gateway Signs / Gateway Sign Easement for Nelson Property

FROM:

SUBJECT:

Discussion

Attached are some examples of potential gateway signage. In addition to the examples provided,
I have examined some examples from the surrounding communities. The signs in New Brighton
and Shoreview w.ere taller than the 4' 6" that was proposed in the easement for the Nelson
property; however, none was any taller than 6 feet. Staff has contacted Mr. Nelson to determine
if he would be open an easement of 20 feet in width by 6 feet in height.

Staff Recommendation

Approve the easement form to be placed on the consent calendar for the January 26th Council
meeting with the ~ended height for the gateway signage easement. If the Council is interested
in pursuing the Gateway Signage concept for next year's budget cycle, staff could take this item
to the Planning Commission and PTRC for review to eome up with a consensus style for
gateway signs. This eould likely be handled at the tentatively scheduled joint PC/PTRC meeting
in July.

Attachments

Revised Easement for Nelson Property
Gateway Signage examples (more samples may be provided at the meeting)
City Hall Monument Sign (as example for monument gateway sign)
Park Signage example

. \\Earth\Planning\Misc FileS\Gateway Signage\Ol-20-04 CC Memo on Gateway Signage Easement Area.doc

Pagel of 1
