,

.

.

e

~
~HILLS

MEMORANDUM

DATE:

December 20, 2004

Agenda Item 2.H.

TO:

Mayor and City Council Members
Michelle Wolfe, City Administrator

Schawn Johnson, Assistant to the City Administrator ~~

FROM:

SUBJECT:

2004 City of Arden Hills Election Discussion

ENCLOSURES:

Election Judge Comment Forms

Backl!TOUnd
Overall, the 2004 Primary and General Elections were very successful. The City of Arden Hills
experienced a 77% voter turnout rate (including Absentee Voters) at the General Election. All of
the election judges were very professional and did an outstanding job dealing with the stress and
scrutiny that came along with this important position.

In order to gain a better understanding of how the Election Day activities went, I mailed a
general comment form to all of the election judges to complete. For your review, I have attached
the comment forms that were completed and returned to me. City staff will take a number of the
suggestions provided by the judges under advisement for future elections,

A concern that was raised by a number of Arden Hills residents is the parking and accessibility
issues at Presbyterian Homes and City Hall. This truly is a concern of mine, but I am not aware
of any other facilities in Precincts 2 and 4 that are large enough to host such an event. In order to
minimize the traffic problems at City Hall, members of Ramsey County Sheriffs Department and
O&M Department were called-in to direct traffic on Highway 96 and the City Hall parking lot.
City staff is requesting your input regarding potential locations within Precincts 2 & 4 that could
be used as voting locations in the future.

City staff would also like to get feedback from the City Council members regarding their
impressions of the voting process and any changes that they would like to see implemented in
future elections,
Recommendation
Staff is requesting City Council's input regarding future precinct locations and possible ways to
improve the clection process in Arden Hills.

\\Earth\Admin\Assistant City Administrator\Memo's and Letters\2004\2004 City Election Recap.DOC
