I

-

,

ARDEN HILLS CITY COUNCIL WORKSESSION
December 20, 2004

6

City Council directed City Staff to continue negotiating with the potential developer.

Council Chamber-Sound Enhancements
Murtuza Siddiqui, Finance Director, reported that the upgraded sound system in the Council
Chamber has worked very well and has improved the sound quality. It has been noted that when
the tables are arranged in the middle of the Council Chamber for work sessions and other
meetings, the existing sound system is uot capable of transmitting sound through the audio
system because there are no microphones set-up on the table. It can be very difficult for people
to hear the dialogue between City Councilmembers and staff from the back of the room.

City staff presented the City Council with the following two options to consider:
. Utilize existing cordless microphones and a wireless lapel microphone.
· Purchase boundary microphones that would be placed in the center of the room and
would have the capability to pick up sound from all sides of the microphone, The
estimated cost for four boundary microphones is $1,600 (including cost and labor).

Councilmember Holden suggested that the tables and chairs be set-up in a U shape. This would
allow members of the City Council and staff to face the audience,

City Administrator Wolfe mentioned that City staff could create an Lor U shape when setting up
the tables and chairs for work session meetings.

Mayor Aplikowski stated that she would prefer not to pass around a cordless microphone.

Councilmember Grant said that the City is very limited on the number of items that it can
purchase using the Cable Fund. The City could purchase the boundary microphones using this
fund. Overall, this is a very small dollar amount.

Councilmember Grant asked staff members if they have checked into purchasing a wireless
boundary microphone?

Finance Director Murtuza Siddiqui said that the City has not explored this option, but he could
contact the vendor and see if this option is available to the City.

Members of thc City Council requested that the Finance Director check into the possibility of
purchasing a wireless boundary microphone. City staff will report back to the City Council with
the different wireless microphone options that are available,

2004 City of Ardeu Hills Election Discussion
Assistant to the City Administrator Schawn Johnson provided a brief overview of the parking
concerns at City Hall and Presbyterian Homes on Election Day. City staff believes that the
parking issues at Presbyterian Homes can be minimized in the future. In order to minimize the
traffic problems at City Hall, members of the Ramsey County Sheriffs Department and O&M
Department were called-in to direct traffic on Highway 96 and the City Hall parking lot.
