Arden Hills
Nick Landwer/URS
Frank Ticknor/ URS

From: Gregory Brown, PE
Arden Hills City Engineer

Date: January 5,2005

Subject: Authorization to Advertise for Bids
Lift Station #4 & #9 Reconstruction Project

Background .
As part of the continuing rehabilitation of the sanitary sewer system for the City, the Council
authorized preparation of Plans and Specification for the Lift Station #4 & #9 Project on
November 29,2004. Plans and Specifications for this project have been completed including a
construc1ion cost estimate.

Project Description
Both Lift Station #4 and #9 are old "steel can" structures built in the early 1960's that have
deteriorated and are in difficult locations to access if problems arise. The method for
reconstruction of #4 and #9 will follow that of Lift Station #7 last year and Lift Station #3 in
1998. A bypass pump will first be installed from an adjacent sanitary manhole into the
forcemain to keep the system running during construction. The existing lift station structures and
control panel will then be removed and the new pumping system and electrical system will be
installed. The bypass is removed once City staff approves the system and the new lift station will
be brought on-line at that time.

The proposed work indicated here is based on final Plans and Specifications. The estimated cost
of construction to rebuild both of these lift stations is approximately $229,000 with the overall
Project cost approximately $263,350. The budget adopted includes $200,000 overall project cost
for this construction item. The estimate reflects inflation of construction costs through the 2004
construction year. The Lift Station Reconstruction project is funded entirely under the Sanitary
Sewer Enterprise Fund which has a current balance of $1,138,151.

.

R:\31809733\DOCUMENTS\WORD\Auth for Ad 1-4-05l.S4&9.doc
