<br />~ <br />~~ILLS <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />MEMORANDUM <br /> <br />DATE: <br /> <br />March 23,2005 <br /> <br />Agenda Item 6.A. <br /> <br />TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council Members <br />Michelle Wolfe, City Administrator <br /> <br />FROM: Schawn Johnson, Assistant to the City AdministratorS'iG <br /> <br />SUBJECT: Appointment of John Mennenga as the City's Building Inspector <br /> <br />BACKGROUND <br /> <br />The position of Building Inspector became vacant when Eric Nordeen accepted the Lake <br />Johanna Fire Marshall position on January 12,2005. The City received 17 applications that were <br />reviewed by City staff. Six candidates were selected for the first round interviews. (One later <br />dropped out) The first round of interviews was conducted by Rick Regnier (Richfield Building <br />Official), Dave Scherbel, and myself. There was unanimous agreement amongst the group as to . <br />who were the top two candidates for the second round of interviews. Those interviews were <br />conducted on March 16th. Michelle Wolfe, Scott Clark, Dave Scherbel, and I were part of the <br />interview panel for the second round of interviews. <br /> <br />DISCUSSION <br /> <br />The recommended candidate is Mr. John Mennenga. Mr. Mennenga earned a Bachelor's Degree <br />in Criminal Justice from Bemidji State University. He also has a Housing Inspection Certificate <br />from North Hennepin Community College and a State of Minnesota Building Official License. <br />He has been employed by the City of St. Paul since November 2004 as a Plans Examiner. In that <br />capacity he has been involved in reviewing building plans, zoning codes, building permits, and <br />reviewing building and zoning related laws and regulations. <br /> <br />Prior to his work in St Paul, Mr. Mennenga worked for the City of Maplewood as a Building <br />Inspector intern. There he assisted the City of Maplewood with building inspections, code <br />enforcement, and record maintenance of building permit applications. <br /> <br />Mr. Mennenga has also worked as a building construction laborer, Community Services intern <br />for the City of North St Paul, and as an Animal Control Warden for the City of Minneapolis. He <br />has a solid background in the building trades and has indicated a strong interest in this position <br />with the City of Arden Hills. Upon receiving the formal job offer he will need to provide 10- <br />days written notice to his current employer. Reference checks have been completed and the . <br />responses from his previous employers have been very positive. <br />
