Memo
City Council
Cummings Park Ice Rink Options
2

.

The Problem
There is not sufficient room for both a hockey and pleasure skating rink to be installed at
Cummings Park. If the City decides to construct a hockey rink it will be non-conforming. It will
be approximately 20 feet narrower and 40 feet shorter then required. The hockey boards that
werc used to construct the hockey rink were dismantled in 2003. They were in poor condition
and were either recycled into other City rinks or scrapped. In addition, the neighborhood
residents appear to be split on the issue of hockey vs. pleasure rink.

The Budget
The cost to purchase supplies and construct a new hockey rink would be approximately
$15,000.00. This includes soil work. Supplies would include items such as the dasher boards,
supports, gates, paint, hardware, rental equipment and safety nets/mesh. The funding source
would be the Park Fund. The estimated cost of$15,000.00 does not include staff time.

There would be no additional costs incurred to construct the pleasure rink.

Requested Council Action
Staff plans on holding a neighborhood meeting in July to inform the residents of the type of rink
that will be installed at Cummings Park for 2005 and the future. Staff is requesting that Council
provide work direction on the type of ice rink to install at Cummings Park.

.

.
