<br />City of Maplewood Parks & Recreation <br />Tobacco-Free Park Policy <br /> <br />Subject: Prohibition of tobacco use in the City of Maplewood's park system. <br /> <br />e <br /> <br />Purpose: In order to protect the health and welfare of our citizens and park visitors, the Maplewood <br />Parks & Recreation Department prohibits the use of tobacco products on city-owned parkland, park <br />facilities and open space. <br /> <br />Policy statement: The City of Maplewood prohibits the use of any tobacco product on all city-owned <br />parkland, park facilities, open space or joint city/school district properties including picnic grounds, <br />walking/biking paths and restroom areas. <br /> <br />The parks prohibiting tobacco use include the following: <br /> <br />Maplewood Community Center <br />Afton Heights Applewood <br />Geranium Gethsemane <br />Hillside Wakefield <br />Lookout Mailand <br />Nebraska Playcrest <br />Sterling Oaks Sunset Ridge <br /> <br />Nature Center & trails <br />Crestview Edgerton <br />Gloster Goodrich <br />Joy Park Kenwood <br />Timber Maplecrest <br />Pleasantview Robinhood <br />Vista hills Western Hills <br /> <br />Neighborhood preserves <br />Flicek Four seasons <br />Harvest Hazelwood <br />Kohlman Lions <br />Maplewood Heights <br />Roselawn Sherwood <br /> <br />The following exemption applies: <br /> <br />Designated patio areas (1 for employees & 1 for guests) at the Maplewood Community Center <br /> <br />, <br /> <br />In creating a tobacco-free environment in city parks, the city policy states: <br /> <br />. Tobacco product use in the proximity of youth and adults engaging in or watching <br />recreational activities is unhealthy and detrimental to the health of others. <br />. Tobacco products once consumed in public spaces are often discarded on the ground, thus <br />posing a risk of ingestion to toddlers and pets and causing a litter problem. <br />. Parents, leaders, coaches and officials are thought to be role models and the use of <br />tobacco products has a negative effect on youth lifestyle choices. <br /> <br />Implementation: Enforcing the Tobacco-Free Park Policy in Maplewood will be through voluntary <br />compliance. <br /> <br />1. Signs will be posted at all city-owned parks, recreation facilities and open spaces; posted <br />signs will remind community members of the Tobacco-free Policy. <br />2. Athletic associations that utilize city-owned facilities must commit to enforcing this policy. <br />3. North High students and/or city staff will make periodic observations of recreation facilities <br />and parklands to monitor for compliance. <br /> <br />Effective date: This policy is effective immediately upon date of adoption, January 24, 2005. <br /> <br />e <br />
