Washington and Ramsey Counties that would radically change how your waste hauling
. _ 'services-are'provided. . .

Counties' Proposal will Hurt Consumers
The proposal by Washington and Ramsey Counties would -likely eliminate the current system......
where you select the waste hauler that best meets your needs for service and price. Instead, the
counties want to impose government-managed/public collection where the counties would
likely detemrine who hauls your waste aiu:i set the rates consumers will pay.

Although the counties say this change is for environmental reasons, we believe the real issue is
the counties' desire to control the g!Il"bage volume going to the Newport waste processing . ',....
facility.. A move to a government managed ~tem would allow the counties to control the
amoUnt of Waste sent to the. Newport waste prOCessing facility, but may result in a substantial
cost increase to taxpayers.

We Have a Better Plan
The waste mdustry believes there is a better solution. Our proposal includes the following four
points:

1.

Preserve Customer Choice.. Allow consumers to continue to choose who provides _ .
waste service "to their home or busitiess. Consumers would also be able to continue.to
negotiate the rates.they pay and the services they want to receive.

Environmental Protection... Haulers certify that we will utilize waste disposal facilities
that meet or exceed strict" state and federal environmental standards, regardless of the
type of waste disposal method used.

rlOte.."'t County Contracts. Haulers have assured the counties. that we will sUPrly
enoUgh waste volume to the Newportwaste processing facility to payoff the remaining
contract obligations. .

. Increase Recycling. Haulers are willing to work together in a public-private partnership
to reduce .the challenges associated with waste disposal. We want to st:rengthf!n t.iIe
pa:rb:tership between state and local government, waste lW.ulers and consumers to
achieve OUT common objective to, reduce, reuse and recycle. -

(e

2

3.

4.

C:,L(
