<br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />~ <br />~HILLS <br /> <br />MEMORANDUM <br /> <br />DATE: <br /> <br />Agenda Item 3.B. <br /> <br />March 22, 2006 <br /> <br />TO: <br /> <br />Honorable Mayor and City Council Members <br />Michelle Wolfe, City Administrator <br /> <br />FROM: <br /> <br />.- <br />Schawn Jolmson, Assistant to the City Administrator 5/'{'" <br /> <br />SUBJECT: <br /> <br />Motion to Amend the City's Tobacco Use Section of the City's Personnel <br />Policy <br /> <br />ENCLOSURES: <br /> <br />Personnel Policy-Prohibiting the Use of Tobacco <br /> <br />Back!!round <br />Recently, City staff began reviewing the City's pcrsonnel policy and noticed that the City's <br />current smoking policy does not cover city vehicles or park shelters. <br /> <br />Therefore, City staff is recommending that the existing language be deleted from the City's <br />personnel policy: <br /> <br />SMOKING- <br /> <br />In an effort to provide a healthy, comfortable and productive working environment for City <br />employees, the City of Arden Hills has designated the City Offices and Maintenance Garage as <br />smoke-free areas. <br /> <br />Employees violating the above policy shall be guilty of a petty misdemeanor and subject to <br />disciplinary action. <br /> <br />City staff is recommending that the following languagc prohibiting the use of tobacco products <br />be incorporated into the City's personnel policy: <br /> <br />PROHIBITING USE OF TOBACCO <br /> <br />Rationale of the Policv <br /> <br />A healthy work force is in the best interest of the City and each of its employees. <br />According to the Surgeon General of the United States, smoking is the .single largest <br />preventable cause of death known to the medical profession. . <br /> <br />\\Metro-inct.us\ArdenlIiJls\Admin\Assistant City Administrator\lvlemo's and Letters\2006\Tobacco Use Policy.
