GENERAL DESIGN CONSIDER\TIONS FOR
WILDLIFE POND CONSTRUCTlON AND WETLA.'m ALTER.-I.TIONS

The Rice Creek Watershed District h::ls reviewed inform::ltion from t.':!e U.S_ Army Corps of
Engineers and the evIinnesot::l Department of Natural Resources on the design and
construction of wildlife ponds. The RCWD recommends th::lt the foilowing considerations be
incorporated. to the gre::ltest possible extent, when constructing wildlife pond. or wnrking
within wetland areas.

SIZE: The wildlife pond should be at le::lst lJ4 acre in sur6ce area
size. although brger ponds (u.p to 1 acre) are preferred.

SHORELINE CONTO~ It is recommended th::lt a variable (rather th= an even-
sided) shoreline be conatructed. This will increase the
amount of shoreline per unit area thereby creating isolated
areas conducive for waterfowl usage.

BOTTOM CONTOUR: The bottom contour should be varied tn promote the growth of
emergent vegetation. A 50% open water and 50% veget..:ltive
cover (including the emergent vegetadon around the shoreline)
will provide the greatest diversity of wildlife species. Watar
depth should be abuut 12 co 18 inches in t.':!e sh::lllow are::l of
the b::lsin and about 3 to 4 t'eet illo.."timum in the deepest
areas.

SIDE SLOPES: The upbnd side slopes towards the pond should range from
3:1 to 10:1. The pund bottom side slope should be 8:1 to
12:1.

BUFFER ZONE: It is imoort=t to re-est::lblish and mainw.in an upl=d
veget.o.ti~e buffer zone around the perimetar of the wildlife
pond to provide nesting habit.o.t =d filtar runnff. Mowing of
upl=d areas should be avoided. if possible, until August 1 to
pro tact nesting areas and allow for brood dispersal.

BOTTOM :'I'1ATERIAL: If possible, topsoil should be placed on the bottom of the
basin to provide a mare suir..J.bie base for aquatic '1egec.:J.tive
growt.':!. In addition, "muck" from an existing wetland should
be added to the topsail, providing a "seed" for a benefici::ll
biologic::l1 aquatic community to be established.

DREDGED SPOILS, All dredged spoils from pond exc::lvation activity will need r.n
be placed above the existing lOa-year flood elevation for the
site. Erosion control measures such as silt fences and/or
st.o.ked hay bales will need to be provided around the spoils.
The spoils should be placed within a diked upland area to
allow the spoils to dewatar into the soil.

I

.1
I

I

I

I

I
I

I

..
I

I

I

I

I

I

I
..

I
