ARDEN HILLS PLANNING COMMISSION -- APRIL 6.2005 2
. 1. Whilc the sibJTI would bc visible from Ilighway 96, thc amount of infonnation
rcquired fiJr sign and the speed of tratlic on Highway 96 (which would increasc thc
nced larger text) may require a Sign Standard Adjustment. However, a smallcr
variance from the Sign Ordinancc Standards would still result in greatcr visibility and
would be marc consistent with the City's Sign Ordinance Standards.
2. The proposcd sign is inconsistent with both the Civic Centcr Zoning District and Sign
District 6 which anticipated more destination oriented facilities that would not requirc
as much signage as the commercial zoning and signage districts. The proposed sign
is much larger than allowed for any commercial zoning and signage districts in the
City.
Commissioner Bezdicek asked if the sign thcre now was the same size of thc proposcd
sign. Mr. Hellegers replicd the ncw sign would be slightly shOltCr.
Chair Sand opened the public hearing at 7: 12 p.m.
Chair Sand invited the applicant to come forward and make comment.
Brucc Thompson, Assistant Director Property Management Ramsey County, statc he
wantcd to come to some kind of an agrecment betwecn the City and the County regarding
signage. He indicated thc mock up sign that was presently there was not going to work.
. He stated thcy did havc an altcrnatc sign he wanted to propose. He noted thc goal in
establishing a monument sign was visibility. He indicated letters of 10'" and 6"' were the
ideal size and letters of that sizc would be visible by the tratlic. He noted if they took
those size lctters and put in all of thc letters thcy needed to that is what dictatcd the size
of thc sign. He stated they also had a goal of having the sign fit the area and the building.
He indicated the colors on the sign would match the building and they would use leftover
brick from thc building and the aluminum would he colored exactly the same as the metal
on the building.
Commissioner Tony Bennctt. Ramscy County, presented to the Commission the proposed
sign for their consideration. Hc indicatcd the sign would need a variance and noted thc
City Hall sign was 119 square feet, which was over the 100 square t()()t limit imposed by
the City and this sign had onc name on it, whilc their sign would have many names on it.
Commissioner Bezdicek asked how many squarc feet was the sign they werc proposing.
Mr. Thompson replied they were proposing a 169 square fect sign.
Commissioner Modcsettc askcd if there would be reconstruction of the holding pond.
Mr. Bennett replied thc holding pond would rcmain as it was and thc sign would fit.
Chair Sand asked how the new sign would be positioned. Mr. Bennett replied it would he
perpcndicular to Highway 96. Hc noted the new sign would he 72"' high and 28 fcct
. long.
Chair Sand asked why they had not seen this Plior to tonight mccting whcn it was dated
March 5. Mr. Thompson replied he belicved thc date was wrong and it should he datcd
April 5. not March 5.
