Arden Hills

BY At BUCZKOWSKI. ;:;;pJ HM:US

Acting at the request of the Arden Hills Parks and
Recreation managel~ the City Council has authorized
City staff to apply for a grant that would allow for the
development of walking/bike trails in the vicinity of
Valentine Hills Elementary School.

The grant is part of a Minnesota Department of
Transportation program called Safe Routes to School
that looks to make hiking and walking to school a more
attradive option for students in grades K-8,

At the Noy. 27 council meeting, Parks and Recreation
manager Michelle Olson presented the grant as an
opportunity to build a more secure pathway in an area
surrounded by busy roads. The proposed trail would
connect existing park trails north of County Road E2,
and could possibly stretch east and west from Snelling
Avenue to New Brighton Road, although preliminary
plans call for the trail to fall short of both roadways,

The Mn/DOT program could provide a maximum of
$175,000 for infrastrudure projects, which is what staff
intends on requesting,

Recipients of the grant funding will be announced
. March 2007, and staff will put a hold on discussion of
the trail development if the application is un success-

ARDEN HILLS: TO PAGE 2

~ Ramsey ~ounty Sun-Focus - Thursday.
