Strandell
What Works Inc.

Re:

Notes: Council Staff Retreat
3/9/07 - 3/10/07

Enclosed please find the final report (notes) on the Arden Hills Council/Staff Retreat.

The easy part is over! Now, you and council members and department heads are challenged to:
1 . Put into practice the many salient ideas and suggestions proffered at the retreat
regarding ways in which both staff and council can be more effective.
2. Create a management action plan (MAP) that is simple and useful as a tool to size and
track all the wonderful priorities delineated in this report. (You will note that I put the
non-ranked priorities into a matrix; this is merely to illustrate the type of MAP tool I
suggest you use, but you will need to modify and structure it to your needs.)
3. Clarify (and wordsmith) the Council Goals so that both the public and staff have a clear
understanding of the city's future direction.

Additionally, it will take your leadership to ensure that the City.s resources are being most
effectively used by keeping the council and the staff working in the "right quadrants". You will find
the time matrix in Attachment B. As process is very important to the council, it would be a pity if it
became more important than meeting your goals and implementing your priorities.

Everyone participated in the retreat. I really enjoyed working with each and everyone of them.

Thank you for asking me to work with you and the City of Arden Hills. It was my pleasure.

Of course, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to phone or email me.
