PLANNINGISSUES & ANALYSES 0 I11
Campus Technologies Issues
1. Adequate size and location of wiring closets in all campus build-
ings. Need for standards.
2. Lack of standards for cable distribution above ceilings and risers
between floors.
3. What should classroom standards for technology include? (hard
wired, wireless, overhead projection, media console, instructor
podium, etc.)
4. Need for additional space for increasing staff, support operations
and personnel mergers between departments. (Lower Level Riley
remodeling of existing Women's Locker Rooms will alleviate cur-
rent needs, but not future / growth needs.)
5. Need quiet space for technology personnel to upgrade technology
skills. (2-3 stations?)
6. Increased demand for computer labs (coordinate demand with indi-
vidual departments)
7. As computers become more applied in educational delivery, demand
for "Technology Zone' (faculty technology assistance) increases.
8. Need a technology training room for faculty/ staff.
9. Storage space is short in many areas, especially with new PC rota-
tion program.
10. Telecomm, Help Desk Campus Technologies are adequately housed,
now and after Lower Level Riley remodeling.
11. Students are coming to campus with more technology skills and
needs every year.
12. Major growth will be in alternative education areas.
13. What will impact of proposed graduate programs be? (similar to
Capella University model?)
14. Separate organizations and effort are required due to separate
portal, internet intranet and Radio internet entities.
15. IS will still need space after Riley remodeling. Also, IS needs space
for quiet technology team space for computer-based training, tech-
nology piloting and testing, certification work.
16. IT does not see a need for additional space due to consolidation
strategy for servers, data storage and networking. The strategy will
allow scalability to permit growth in support and number of people
being served.
Code Issues
Northwestern College has done an excellent job of maintaining its facil-
ities. At the same time, there are numerous code deficiencies. Of par-
ticular note is that are existing corridors that should have the code
required 1 -hour fire protection. Common air return in corridors (doors,
air transfer, HVAC balance) is an especially acute problem.
0
NORTHWESTERN COLLEGE CAMPUS MASTER PLAN PARTNERS & SIRNY ARCHITECTS PAGE 3.23
