The City Council is being asked to discuss what the goals of a tree preservation ordinance should be as well as potential impacts on the environment and property owners. Staff is requesting further direction on determining the scope of a new tree preservation ordinance. Backl!round Staff has been directed by the Planning Commission and City Council to examine the current zoning code regarding tree preservation. Staff was asked to work on an ordinance that would address tree preservation for new development, redevelopment, and subdivisions within the city. In response to this request, staff has examined a number of tree preservation ordinances throughout the metropolitan area. In addition, local and national sources have been consulted that offer potential best practices on developing a tree preservation ordinance. As a result of this initial research, it has become clear that there is no single way to initiate a tree preservation ordinance, and the scope, goals, and methods of achieving tree preservation goals vary greatly from community to community.
