EMPLOYMENT TRENDS AND CHARACTERISTICS

Resident employment data is calculated as an annual average and reveals the workforce and
number of employed persons living in the area. It is important to note that not all of these indi-
viduals necessarily work in the area. Table 13 presents covered employment by industry in Hen-
nepin, Ramsey and Anoka Counties in 2000 and 2006. Covered employment data is calculated as
an annual average and reveals the number of jobs a particular area.

The following are key trends derived from the employment data.

Employed People Livin!! in the Area

~ Most of the housing growth in Arden Hills is being generated by employment in the Twin Ci-
ties Metro Area, Table 12 reveals that the three-county labor force (the number of people
employed or seeking employment in an area) has grown by nearly 4,000 between 2000 and
2006. In the mean time, the total number employed has dropped by 8,900. (In December of
2007, the Minnesota unemployment rose to 4.9%, up from 4.0% in November 2007).

~ Due in part because of the economic downtum after 9111 , job creation has been somewhat
stagnant. It remains to be seen how the housing correction and the problems in the secondary
mortgage market will affect job growth at the end ofthis decade.

TABLE 12
RESIDENT EMPLOYMENT (ANNUAL AVERAGE)
HENNEPIN, RAMSEY & ANOKA COUNTIES
2000 to 2007
Total Minnesota U.S.
Labor Total Total Unemployment Unemployment Unemployment
Year Force Emploved Unemploved Rate Rate Rate
2000 t.I30.554 1.099,929 30,625 2.7% 3.2% 4.0%
2001 1.142.627 1,102,005 40,622 3.6% 3.9% 4.7%
2002 1,135,354 1,084,942 50,412 4.4% 4.6% 5.8%
2003 1,138,620 1,085,289 53,331 4.7% 4.9% 6.0%
2004 1.135.094 1.085,194 49,900 4.4% 4.7% 5.6%
2005 1,127,575 1,084,877 42,698 3.8% 4.1% 5.1%
2006 1.134,433 1,092,924 4].509 3.7% 4.0% 4.6%
2007 1,138,917 1,091,029 47,888 4.2% 4.6% 4.6%
Chao.e 2000-07 3,879 -8,900 10,884 1.00/0- 0.8% 0.6%
Sources: Minnesota Workforce Center; Maxfield Research Inc.

MAXFIELD RESEARCH INC.

34
