The Planning Commission is being asked to discuss the drafts and provide <br />comment and feedback to staff. In addition, staff is requesting further direction on specific items <br />to be discussed at the work session. <br />BacklZround <br />Staff has been directed by the Planning Commission and City Council to examine the current <br />zoning code regarding tree preservation. Staff was asked to create an ordinance that would better <br />handle redevelopment and subdivisions within the city. In response to this request, staff has <br />examined a number of tree preservation ordinances throughout the metropolitan area. In <br />addition, local and national sources have been consulted that offer potential best practices on <br />developing a tree preservation ordinance. Staff met with the Planning Commission, the City <br />Council, and the PTRC to discuss goals and objectives of a Tree Preservation Ordinance. Staff <br />has drafted an ordinance and is requesting feedback from the Planning Commission. <br />In the process of research tree preservation, it became clear that landscaping was equally <br />important to preserving trees. While tree preservation regulates what can be removed from a <br />property, landscaping requirements regulate what can and should be planted.
