Information Gathering

Use Good VerbaI Skills

. Ask comprehensive! open-ended questions to maintain a good talk ratio.

. State the questions in each area broadly and get more specific.

. Except where you are looking for a specific answer, avoid questions that begin with:

"Did", "Should", "Would", "Are", "Will", etc.

. Follow the pattern, but also be reasonably flexible such that the interview does not
become mechanical.

. Use "summary-probes" and "summary pushes" to control talkative applicants.

. To draw out reticent applicants, use good comprehensive questions and good non-
verbal skills.

. Be completely pennissive, no matter what you hear.

. Show no surprise, frown, or any communication that would discourage negative

information.

. Use restatements and reflections.

Use Good Nonverbal Skills

. Take notes consistently.
. Smile frequently at the beginning of the interview even though nothing funny is
happening.
. Use good facial animation--eye contact and eyebrows are crucial.
. Use varied posture to indicate interest and animation.
. Use good vocal expression--higher registers of the voice and variation
. Encourage reticent applicants by head nodding, "um-hmmrns", and pauses.

9
