<br /> <br />Working with an Advisory Committee <br /> <br /> <br />Because working with an Advisory Committee will be the central element in <br />Ihe process of communication and consensus building, it will be beneficial to <br />follow certain principles learned from similar experiences. <br /> <br />1. Understand the Roles of the Committee and the Consultant. <br />how the Committee and the consultant should work together. <br /> <br />2. Build a Common Base of Knowledge. Both the Committee and the <br />consultanthave to .review and understand the pri9!work,.andmake <br />sense of it Thetwocan info11i1 oneanoilier. <br /> <br />Discuss <br /> <br />3. Provide Materials in Advance. The Committee shonld always have <br />adequate time to review the written and graphic materials that will be <br />discussed at each meeting, and they should make the effort to do so. <br /> <br />4. Be Courteous and Respectful in Discussions. A few people should not <br />be allowed to dominate the discussion to the exclusion of others. <br /> <br />5. Encourage Questions and Debate. The Committee should question <br />assumptions, probe the material and challenge the consultaut <br /> <br />6. Evetyone Should Participate. Each member should speak at every <br />meeting. Members should not be afraid to speak their minds. <br /> <br />7. Establish Ground Rules for Making Decisions. Whether the decision- <br />making process is formal or infonnal, or both, it should be set forth and <br />agreed npon. <br /> <br />8. Agree on a Schedule. There should be a written time schedule so that <br />the Committee understands how the process is expected to work. The <br />Committee should set linn meeting opening and adjourning times so <br />people are not discouraged by run-on meetings. Have an agenda for <br />each meeting and try to follow it. <br /> <br />9. Make Decisions and Move Forward. There should be an opportunity to <br />recap the prior meetings, but generally the process ought to proceed <br />steadily forward if it ever is to conclude. <br /> <br />10. Be Emissaries for the Plan.
